Who do we Petition:
All health ministries of all countries and the World Health Organization (WHO)
What do we want them to do:
The global internet petition: Law enforcement for a health warning labels on foodstuffs containing added sugars.
Why is this important:
Already more than 347 million people worldwide have diabetes and every 10 seconds 2 are added and 1 dies. The latest count was in 2004, when an estimated 3.4 million people died from consequences of high blood sugar. More than 80% of diabetes deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries and the count is exceeding the 500 million mark, taking into consideration that sugar is highly consumed in developing countries where surveying is difficult.
Poverty increases intake of sugar when different food is unavailable and where healthier food is too expensive. The WHO projects that diabetes deaths will increase by two thirds between 2008 and 2030.
Here is a short list of health risks associated with high sugar consumption: Obesity, mineral imbalance, reduced defense against infectious diseases, loss of tissue elasticity and function, reduced high density lipoproteins and finally sugar is a highly addictive substance.
